Last week I finished binge watching all 16 seasons of Grey's Anatomy on Netflix. It only took me over 4 months to watch it all. Of course I had to go to work every week, I had a social life, I ate food, I slept, & I watched other shows in between. So it didn't literally take up the entire 4 months of my life, but in 4 months time I got all caught up. This blog will only have one picture in it because I want pictures I use in my blogs to come from my own life or be personally sent to me by someone else. Although, I will be sharing YouTube videos from other people in this blog, giving the proper credit for the channels. That being said, I thought I'd share my thoughts on the show.
(A picture of me in Seattle with a ferryboat in the background, December of 2011, Dr. Derek Shepherd loved ferryboats & Seattle)
Before I started watching Grey's Anatomy I had just finished binge watching the show called Outer Banks on Netflix. This might sound silly, but the reason I watched Outer Banks was because Brian that I've known for over 23 years now & who is practically my brother, is from the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Since I was on the track of watching things that take place where people I know are from, I decided to start watching Grey's Anatomy because it takes place in Seattle & I'm originally from Washington State. Before Grey's Anatomy, in the over 29 years of my life I had never gotten into a hospital show before because I didn't think I would be interested in any of them. Well... Grey's Anatomy quickly became one of my favorite shows.
The actors in that show are amazing! I've felt so many emotions while watching this show, of course part of it is thanks to the creator Shonda Rhimes, but the actors definitely are a big part of my emotions. Some of their best acting takes place inside the operating rooms. The characters wear medical masks whenever they they do a surgery and yes they do speak with the masks on, but you don't see any of their facial expressions. While wearing a mask, the actors do all of their reacting with their eyes and the actors are incredible at it. Although I was never a medical student in school, I feel like I've learned so much about medical terms thanks to how realistic these actors played doctors & nurses. Even the guest starring actors who played patients were fantastic at bringing out realistic emotions with their characters.
My favorite characters changed throughout the show due to character deaths or characters just being written off some how. I always had a favorite male character as well as a favorite female character at the same time. Here's a list of those favorite characters.
1st) George O' Malley & Izzie Stevens: I loved George's personality and how much he cared about everyone. I loved Izzie's reactions to some of the cases and thought she had an interesting back story of how she used to be a model and also used to live in a trailer park.
2nd) Lexi Grey & Derek Shepherd: I thought Lexi was really beautiful and had a cute personality. I also love how much she wanted to be a part of Meredith's life. I actually didn't realize how much I liked Derek as a character until after he died. I admired Derek's love for ferryboats and the beauty of Seattle because I also find Seattle beautiful. I also loved his positivity on saving lives, even when there wasn't much hope. I also think that Derek is the best guy for Meredith out everyone she has a relationship with.
3rd) Arizona Robbins & Alex Karev: I loved the positivity that Arizona had for most of the show and how she would roller skate around in the hospital. I think it's awesome how even after loosing her leg, she still eventually went back to work as a doctor with a prosthetic leg. Alex was actually my favorite male character before I realized how much I liked Derek as a character. I thought it was really cool how Alex became a doctor even after having a rough childhood with his biological parents and going through different foster homes. I think it's funny how most of the women that Alex had relations with throughout the show somehow went crazy on him. Alex deep down is such a great guy with a big heart. I think out of all the characters in the show, Alex goes through the biggest transformation with his personality, having the most character growth.
Honorable Mentions/ Cristina Yang, April Kepner, & Jackson Avery: These characters, even after two of them left show, were never favorites of mine in the show but they came close. I like how Christina was one half of the "Twisted Sisters" with Meredith. I like how April wasn't afraid to share her beliefs at work & was a funny character at times. With Jackson, I felt like I was most similar to him even though we're not. In more than one occasion, Jackson either gets complemented on or others talk about his intense eyes. One of the complements that I've received the most in my life, is that I have really beautiful eyes.
4th) Miranda Bailey & Owen Hunt: Throughout the show you really get see Miranda release her emotions. I love how she's the Star Wars fan of the hospital and that she uses Star Wars in some of her conversations with patients & doctors. Yes, Owen has only been my favorite for five episodes being that it was after Alex left that he became a favorite, but he's worth a favorite spot, as short as it may be. Actor Kevin McKidd plays Owen so good as a Trauma surgeon who has his own history of trauma. Owen has such a big heart deeply loving the women in his life and wanting to have his own children. I felt really bad for him the way the show left off with him reacting to finding out about Teddy cheating on him the day of their wedding, Kevin's acting was fantastic in that scene.
Next up, I thought I'd share what I think are the top three saddest season endings for the show. All three of them involve death, but they're three different kinds of death. This is where I'll start sharing YouTube videos. I'll list them in the order that they happen in the show.
First- (The Most Surprising) George in Season 5 Finale: George jumped in front of a bus to save someone's life & we don't find out that it's George until he's already in the hospital for a while as a John Doe. This episode leads to his death in the next episode. Here's a video showing the S5 finale, also with Izzie in the hospital, from the YouTube channel Cedric F Morrow:
Second- (The Most Intense) Lexie in the Season 8 Finale: Meredith, Derek, Arizona, Cristina, Mark, & Lexie all get into a plane crash that causes Lexie's death & leads to Mark's death in the next episode. Mark's loving goodbye to Lexie is so sad. This video shows Lexie's death as well as Mark's death from the YouTube channel prisoncreationz:
Third- (The Most Heroic) Derek Shepherd in the Season 11 Finale: Derek saves the lives of the people who just got into a bad car accident right in front of him, before getting into his own car accident shortly after that. The scenes with him in the hospital are so sad. This deserves two videos, the first showing the scene that really got me tearing up with the little girl that Derek saved before his own accident from the YouTube channel ReWatch TV:
Here's the other video from YouTube channel Aiza Amin:
Those are the 3 saddest finales for the show in my opinion. Most of the finales in this show are either really sad, really shocking, or really thrilling. My favorite finale for the show is actually the most beautiful ending for the show in my opinion. It's also the last time we see the characters of Arizona Robbins and April Kepner. In the background you hear Sara Ramirez, who played Callie Torres, singing. Here's my favorite finale from YouTube channel Marco Podetti:
The thing that makes me mad about this show, and that is also the reason that I won't continue watching this show, is how Alex Karev was written off the show. First off, I thought Alex & Jo Wilson were perfect together because they both had rough childhoods & Jo is beautiful. In the last episode that we see Alex, he does the voice over of himself reading goodbye letters that he wrote to Jo, Meredith, Miranda, & Richard Webber. It makes me mad that my favorite male character at the time doesn't even say goodbye to everyone in person. They all deserve way better than a letter. Secondly, he goes to live with Izzie Stevens. Yes, Izzie was my first favorite female character, but that changed over the course of the show. The fact that he left Jo who he was in love with, who he was perfect with, to live with Izzie also got me really mad. I did finish the rest of the season after that, but that's it.
Overall, Grey's Anatomy is now one of my favorite shows. I hope you enjoyed my thoughts on the television series. So until my next blog, I hope you all have beautiful days ahead of you.
