(Me in my Freddy Krueger costume)
I will be continuing the Canada edition of the "Things I'd Like to Do" series, but since we're in the spooky season I'm going to write about something else today. October is my 3rd favorite month of the year because it has my 3rd favorite holiday in Halloween and I love horror movies. We all know that the horror genre is all over the television in October. In this blog I'm going to list my top 4 favorite horror franchises/films in each decade starting with the 80s. I was in born in 1990, but my favorite horror franchises came out in the 80s. So here we go.
1980s:
1) A Nightmare On Elm Street franchise- I love how Freddy Krueger can do whatever he wants in these movies because he lives in the dream world. I also really enjoyed Freddy vs Jason that came out years later as well as the film that came out in 2010. My 2 favorite films from the franchise are the first film and Dream Warriors. Not only is this franchise my #1 favorite from the 80s, but it's also my all-time favorite horror franchise.
2) Halloween franchise- I also really love Michael Myers. I grew up watching the Halloween movies with my dad. Halloween 5 and the 2007 Halloween films are actually my 2 favorite films of the franchise. Halloween is also not only my 2nd favorite 80s franchise, but my 2nd favorite horror franchise of all-time as well.
3) Friday the 13th franchise- I love the fact that whenever it's a Friday the 13th date in real life, regardless of what month it is, people get superstitious that something weird or creepy will happen. I think this horror franchise is behind some of that superstition. My 2 favorite films from this franchise would be Part 2 and Part 8 when Jason goes to Manhattan.
4) Hellraiser franchise- All of the monsters in this franchise are terrifying and gross. This franchise has 2 films in the 80s, 2 in the 90s, and 2 films in the early 2000s. My 2 favorite films in this franchise are the first 2 films which is why I'm placing it in the 80s category.
1990s:
1) IT- The IT clown is the most terrifying horror clown of all time in my opinion. I love that it came out the same year that I was born. I love how the first remake came out 27 years later like how Pennywise returns every 27 years. The original IT is also my 3rd all-time favorite horror film.
2) Child's Play- Yes, the first film of this franchise came out in 1988 but the next 3 films in this franchise came out in the 90s with Child's Play 2 coming out the year that I was born so I'm placing it in the 90s category. A haunted doll is pretty scary, right? My 2 favorite films from this franchise are Child's Play 2 and The Bride of Chucky.
3) Leprechaun franchise- I love the Leprechaun character. Growing up I heard the stories of the leprechaun guarding his pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. My 2 favorite films in the franchise are the first film, which has my favorite actress Jennifer Aniston in it, and Leprechaun 3 when he's in Las Vegas.
4) Scream- I really love how the first film talked about the different horror stereo types. That being said my 2 favorite films from this franchise are the first film and the 2nd film.
2000-2010:
1) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise- This is actually the oldest of all the films in this blog because the original film came out in the 70s. So there's one film in the 70s, one film in the 80s, 2 films in the 90s, 2 films in this decade, and 2 films in the next decade. My 2 favorite films are the ones that came out in this decade, 2003 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. This horror franchise is my 5th all-time favorite horror franchise.
2) Jeepers Creepers- The first film of the series is a solid film and I love it. The films that came after the first one are okay, but the first film is a fantastic horror movie.
3) Darkness Falls- This movie really puts the fear in darkness.
4) The Grudge franchise- The Japanese curse made great films and this franchise is based off of the larger Ju-On Japanese franchise.
2011-2021:
1) The Conjuring Universe- I freaking love the films in this universe! The Conjuring Universe is my 4th favorite franchise after A Nightmare On Elm Street, Halloween, and IT. I I haven't seen a movie from this franchise that I didn't like. Surprisingly, I still haven't seen Annabelle Comes Home, but I hope to change that this year. My 2 favorite films from this franchise are Annabelle: Creation and The Nun.
2) Insidious Franchise- These films are brilliantly terrifying. The first film came out in 2010, but the rest came out in this decade. My 2 favorite films in this franchise are Chapter 3 and Chapter 2.
3) a tie between The Pet Cemetery remake and the Poltergeist remake- I like the original ones too, but these films are so good.
4) a tie between A quiet Place and Malignant- I love the hole concept of A Quiet Place where you literally have to be quiet or the monsters will come and how one of the actresses is actually deaf in real life. I still need to see A Quiet Place Part 2. Malignant just came out last month, but it is definitely worth being on this list.
So those are my favorite horror films from the 80s-present day. Just because a horror film didn't make this list doesn't mean that I don't like it. There are a lot of great horror films out there. I've been watching horror films since I was a little boy, and they don't scare me. I hope you enjoyed reading this blog about my favorite horror films. I hope you have a happy Halloween and until my next blog, I hope you have beautiful days ahead of you.
